Dating back some 200 years, this brick and timber framed cottage is situated right on the Kennet & Avon Canal at Hungerford Wharf, where merchandise used to be loaded and unloaded en route to Bath and Newbury. Today the narrow boat, 'The Rose of Hungerford', which is moored at the wharf, operates as a pleasure craft for visitors wishing to explore the restored canal. There are extensive walks along the canal tow path to Hungerford Common and Freeman's Marsh, part of an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and of Special Scientific Interest, which is popular with bird watchers. Further along the canal at Kintbury, horse drawn barge trips are on offer.
Hungerford itself is an interesting town with an attractive, wide High Street and is well known for its antique shops. It also boasts a new leisure centre with spa, sauna & jacuzzi and there is a swimming pool. Hungerford provides a very central base for exploring this part of Southern England, Avebury, Stonehenge, Windsor, Winchester, Oxford and Salisbury all being within an hour's drive.
Canal Side Cottage is one in a small cluster of 'mews' style cottages approached from the High Street via a small courtyard. It provides a cosy, characterful, attractively furnished pied a terre for a couple or small family.
