Beneath Inkpen Beacon, beside a meandering country lane is Beacon Cottage, 200 years old in parts and combining character with a high degree of comfort, including an expertly designed kitchen. Situated on a former small holding still with a few animals, it makes an ideal base for walkers and is very central for excursions to Highcleare Castle (setting for Watership Down), Avebury, Windsor, Winchester, Oxford and The Cotswolds. At Kintbury (2 1/2 miles) there are horse drawn narrow boat trips on the canal and a British Rail link to London (55 minutes) and Salisbury. Hungerford (antique shops) 3 miles, Newbury 7, and Marlborough 12 miles.
