Wiltshire

Wiltshire is a county without a coastline and with only one city; to many it can seem to be just an area you pass through to the West Country. Yet Wiltshire is far more than that; the ancient landscapes can lift your spirit and excite your curiosity - the trackways which cross Salisbury Plain and the Marlborough Downs were known to travellers even before the great prehistoric features of Stonehenge, Avebury and Silbury Hill were created. Stonehenge is now a World Heritage Site, its orientation on the rising and setting sun being one if its remarkable features.

The focus of southern Wiltshire is Salisbury; from whichever direction you approach it, the 14th century spire of the cathedral makes an essential stopping place. Salisbury can justly claim to be one of England's most attractive cities, surrounded by chalk hills with an entourage of delightful villages and the meeting point for the Rivers Ebble, Wylye, Avon and Bourne. Just west of Salisbury, Wilton, ancient capital of Wessex, preserves the name of the Saxon tribe from which the county gets its name.

Wiltshire is also a county of great houses; some of the loveliest set in the grounds of great beauty are Wilton House, Mompesson House, Breamore House, Stourhead, Bowood House and Lacock Abbey. Longleat, home of the Marquess of Bath, also boasts the first Safari park to be opened in Europe, in 1966, and has the the World's largest Hedge Maze.
