Holiday Cottages in Wiltshire
Holiday cottages in Wiltshire and the cathedral city of Salisbury
The county of Wiltshire
Wiltshire is a county without a coastline and with only one city; to many it can seem to be just an area you pass through on the way to the West Country. Yet Wiltshire is far more than that; its ancient landscapes can lift your spirit and excite your curiosity – the trackways, which cross Salisbury Plain and the Marlborough Downs, were known to travellers even before the great prehistoric features of Stonehenge, Avebury and Silbury Hill were created.
The focus of southern Wiltshire is Salisbury; from whichever direction you approach it, the 14th century spire of the cathedral makes an essential stopping place. Salisbury can justly claim to be one of England’s most attractive cities, surrounded by chalk hills with an entourage of delightful villages and the meeting point for the Rivers Ebble, Wylye, Avon and Bourne. Just west of Salisbury, Wilton, ancient capital of Wessex, preserves the name of the Saxon tribe from which the county gets its name.
